The meeting began at 6:30 p.m. with a welcome from Jen Schauble.

We took the opportunity to thank Dr. Terry Mancini for his years of dedication to the CAP. Terry is retiring at the end of this school year, and we wish him well. We are grateful for his participation over the years and will miss his wonderful presence very much.

Business Update: Tim Harrigan gave the CAP a business update. The plant will be introducing one new product in June 2005, and one older product will be coming back, assuming the DEA manufacturing quota is received as anticipated. The plant was approximately 63% utilized in 2004. Tim also outlined the corporate strategy for Lonza worldwide. The plant continues to evaluate new products as the opportunities arise.

Incinerator Update: Don Hoffman gave the CAP an update concerning the comprehensive performance test for the incinerator which was held on March 2 and 3, 2005. Lonza is operating well below the compliance limits for all test parameters. Once the final data is received from the results of the test burn, Lonza will issue an Amended Notice of Compliance. This will be submitted by April 11, 2005. By January 2006, Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP) will have reviewed the test burn data and issued Lonza’s final operating parameters.

Lonza Fire Alarm System: Don Hoffman also presented an overview of Lonza’s new fire alarm system. The new system replaces a 25 year old analog system with new digital technology. Each function of the old system is replicated in the new system with a much higher degree of reliability. The new system includes sensors that will self-diagnose problems and report back to the central monitoring system. The increased reliability of the new system will reduce false alarms, which will save fire company resources from coming to the plant unnecessarily. The system is an open network design that allows for adding additional safety devices easily, with minimal investment. Lonza invested $800,000 in capital investment funds for this project.

New Environmental Engineer: Don Hoffman also told the CAP about Lonza’s new environmental engineer, Mark Sweitzer. Mark has over 16 years of experience in Environmental Management, 7 of which have been spent working on regulatory compliance in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Mark has specific experience with local groundwater quality programs and groundwater remediation issues. Mark is a registered professional geologist in Pennsylvania.

Community Donations: Lonza continues to make corporate donations of local interest. So far in 2005, Lonza has donated to Upper Merion’s Concerts Under the Stars series, Pennsylvania’s Free Enterprise Week, Swedesburg Fire Company, UMAHS After Graduation Party, the Upper Merion Senior Service Center, and the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Lonza employees also donated almost $2000 to aid the Tsunami victims; Lonza, Inc. matched these funds. Lonza is also participating in a project with Roberts Elementary School; collecting used toner cartridges for the Tzomma Shoffa Project in conjunction with Eastern University.

New Business: We are planning on holding an Open House for VIPs on Tuesday, June 21, 2005. This will include a brunch, along with a tour and a brief presentation on the plant and its’ history. Invitations will be sent out at a later date.
